WHY PAKISTAN DIDN'T WIN AGAINST ZIMBABWE

Zimbabwe end winless streak against Pakistan in style

HARARE: A sturdy 85 from Hamilton Masakadza and a crucial late cameo from Sean Williams saw Zimbabwe record their first one-day win over Pakistan since 1998.
Chasing 245 in the first one-day international of a three-match series on Tuesday, Masakadza laid the platform before Williams finished the job with an unbeaten 39 from 23 deliveries as Zimbabwe won by seven wickets with 10 balls to spare.
Although Misbah-ul-Haq held the Pakistan innings together in his 50th consecutive ODI as Pakistan captain, he was left to lament his decision to bat first at a venue where the pitch generally improves as the day goes on.
Misbah finished unbeaten on 83 and shared in a 99-run stand for the third wicket with Mohammad Hafeez, who made 70, but with Pakistan's middle and lower order failing to fire they could only manage 244 for seven.
It could have been far worse for the tourists had Zimbabwe held their catches - both Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shehzad were put down during an opening partnership of 56, while Hafeez was let off on 10 and 55.
Misbah required no such luck in a well-paced knock that saw him go to fifty in 62 balls before opening up towards the end, and his two sixes off Tinashe Panyangara in the final over of the innings ensured that Pakistan at least had something to bowl at.
However Masakadza, who was restored to the top of the Zimbabwean innings for Pakistan's tour, put on a confident stand of 107 with his opening partner Vusi Sibanda as Pakistan's bowlers found little assistance in the pitch.
Sibanda was eventually trapped lbw for 54 by Saeed Ajmal, but Brendan Taylor maintained stability with a calm 43 not out as he and Masakadza took Zimbabwe to 176 for one in the 38th over.
Masakadza missed out on a potential century when he slapped an Ajmal delivery straight to short extra cover, and the pressure was back on when Timycen Maruma put in another nervous showing with the bat.
Zimbabwe needed a nerveless innings to put them back on track, and Williams provided it as he struck four fours before finishing the game in emphatic fashion when he hit Mohammad Irfan for six over wide long-on.
The two sides meet again at the same venue on Thursday. (AFP)

Ashes 2013: Oval finish an absolute disgrace - Agnew

Ashes 2013: Oval finish an absolute disgrace - Agnew

The way the fifth and final Ashes Test finished on Sunday leaves me both speechless and angry.
For the bad-light regulations to force the umpires to take the players off the field with England needing just 21 runs off 24 balls for victory, in front of a full house at The Oval, with millions watching and listening at home on the edge of their seats, is an absolute disgrace.
There are many of us who have talked to people at the International Cricket Council about this. We have told them what was likely to transpire.
I'm not trying to be clever about it - I wasn't the only one - but we knew that this was an embarrassment waiting to happen.

Sarfraz Ahmed finally departs for Zimbabwe tour

Sarfraz Ahmed finally departs for Zimbabwe tour

LAHORE: Sarfraz Ahmed finally left for Harare on Thursday morning to join the Pakistan team currently on tour in Zimbabwe. He had to wait anxiously as his visa arrived late.
He refrained from talking to the media before his departure on the directives of PCB officials.
Sarfraz was included in the T-20 and ODI team after PCB’s concern about the fitness of Umer Akmal.
Pakistan play the first T-20 match of the series on Friday 23rd August.

Tennis: Maria Sharapova out of US Open with shoulder injury

Tennis: Maria Sharapova out of US Open with shoulder injury

NEW YORK: Russian world number three Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the US Open because of a right shoulder injury, tournament organizers announced.
On the eve of the draw for the year's final Grand Slam event that begins Monday on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts, US Open tournament director David Brewer announced the withdrawal.
"Maria has informed us that she will be unable to compete at the US Open this year due to a right shoulder bursitis and has withdrawn from the tournament," he said on Wednesday.
"We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to her return to New York next year."
As a result, Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska moves into the third seed in the women's singles draw and other seeds will move up one place, with Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova advancing into the 32nd spot.
Sharapova's only match since a second-round defeat at Wimbledon in late June was a loss in her opening match in last week's WTA event at Cincinnati to American Sloane Stephens.
That was followed by a split with Jimmy Connors, who had been her coach for less than three weeks. Sharapova had been nursing a hip injury after Wimbledon. (AFP)

Wasim Akram ties the knot with Shaniera Thompson

KARACHI: Famed Pakistan paceman Wasim Akram on Wednesday announced that he had married his Australian girlfriend, Shaniera Thompson, saying he has started a new life on a happy note.
"I married Shaniera in Lahore last week in a simple ceremony and this is the start of a new life for me, my wife and for my kids," Wasim told AFP.
The 47-year-old's first wife Huma died in 2009 after multiple organ failure.
Wasim proposed to 30-year-old Thompson, a former public relations consultant, on bended knee last month.
Thompson came to Karachi earlier this month before going to Lahore to see Wasim's ailing father, where the marriage was solemnised.
Wasim said Thompson had converted to Islam and is learning Urdu. "She has embraced Islam and is learning our language. She has been close to my sons and they form a very good bond," said Wasim of his two sons from his first marriage.
Wasim played 104 Tests and 356 one-day internationals for Pakistan in a career lasting from 1984 to 2003.
He was regarded as one of the best left-arm fast bowlers to have played the game and remains a major celebrity in Pakistan.
Wasim was player of the tournament in the country's only triumph in the World Cup, in Australia in 1992. He captained Pakistan to a runners-up finish in the 1999 World Cup in England.
According to sources a grand reception will be held in September or November

Serena routs Cirstea to win Toronto title

Serena routs Cirstea to win Toronto title

TORONTO: World number one Serena Williams made it look easy Sunday, routing Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-0 to win the WTA title in Toronto and signal her readiness for a US Open title bid.
Williams needed just 61 minutes to capture her eighth title of 2013 and the 54th of her career, which moved her past Monica Seles into sole possession of ninth on the WTA career list in the Open Era.
But she said the lopsided win belied the difficulty of winning any title. "No tournament is ever easy, especially being in the position I am in," Williams said. "The tournament starts and they expect you to win. "Who knows if I'll even make it to the semi-finals? It's a lot of pressure and it's not easy."
The 31-year-old American, stung by a fourth-round Wimbledon exit after grabbing her 16th Grand Slam crown at Roland Garros, claimed a third Canadian title to go with those she won in 2001 and 2011.
It was a perfect prep for her defence of the US Open title, with Williams hoping she can put her Australian Open and Wimbledon disappointments behind her when the last Grand Slam of the year begins on August 26. "I'm disappointed I didn't win Wimbledon or Australia," said Williams, who is slated for one more hardcourt tuneup at Cincinnati next week. "I'm always insatiable."
Her formula for attacking Flushing Meadows, the venue of the US Open, is simple: "Stay positive ... stay hungry and just stay aggressive".
Cirstea, who had beaten three top-10 players en route to the final in Caroline Wozniacki, Petra Kvitova and Li Na as well as former world number one Jelena Jankovic, couldn't pull off another upset, although Williams acknowledged the 23-year-old Romanian's run had caught her attention. "I know she's so capable of winning big matches," Williams said. "And she's had so many big upsets this week. I didn't want to be another casualty."
In the end, however, it was never close as Williams handed Cirstea a third straight-sets defeat in as many meetings. Cirstea has never managed to take more than two games off Williams in a set.
Despite her growing confidence, Cirstea's nerves betrayed her as she opened the match with a double fault, and delivered another double to surrender her serve in the first game.
On the verge of another break in the third game, she produced her best rally of the match to keep Williams at bay briefly, but the American gained the break on her third opportunity for a 3-0 lead. "I actually think the start was not as bad as the score showed," Cirstea said. "First three games I actually had really good chances in all of them, so I could have been up 3-0."
An on-court discussion with coach Darren Cahill at the changeover energized Cirstea.
She broke Williams at love and held to narrow the gap to 3-2, but the magic didn't last.
Williams won the last three games to pocket the set in 37 minutes.
Another pep-talk from Cahill at 3-0 in the second set couldn't help Cirstea, her only flash of resistance coming when she saved a first match point, only to smack a forehand wide on the second. "She got better as the match went along," Cirstea said. "I was not able to pick up my game as I was in the past few matches. "I actually played probably the best game of the match at a set and 5-0 down, but all credit to her. There is a reason why we have a ranking and why she is on top of that ranking. "She's the number one player and she's proving that every single time she steps on the court."

Usain Bolt continues to rule the sprinting world

Usain Bolt continues to rule the sprinting world

WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • Venue: Moscow, Russia
  •
  • Date: 10-18 August
Coverage: Live on BBC TV, BBC Radio 5 live, BBC Sport website, mobiles, tablets and Connected TVs.
It is a mark of Usain Bolt's talent that after winning yet another world title here in Moscow he seemed almost disappointed with his performance.
The time of 9.77 seconds was slow by his exceptional standards and some way off his world record of 9.58secs set in Berlin four years ago.
But on a night when electric storms provided the spectacular backdrop to another world-beating performance, he still showed why he is the sport's biggest draw.
The final was missing some of the world's fastest men. No Asafa Powell and no Tyson Gay - both forced to pull out after testing positive for banned drugs. And no defending champion Yohan Blake after injury ruled out Bolt's Jamaican understudy.

Ronaldo leads Real Madrid over Chelsea

Ronaldo leads Real Madrid over Chelsea

MIAMI: Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal in each half to power Real Madrid to a 3-1 victory over Chelsea in a football friendly at Sun Life Stadium on Wednesday.

Ronaldo scored off a free kick in the 31st minute and helped seal the victory with a header in the 57th minute in front of the crowd of 67,273.

"The team played fantastic," Ronaldo said. "This is what we are looking for. We are getting better."

Marcelo Vieira also scored in the 14th minute for Real Madrid in the game which culminated the eight-team, 12-game International Champions Cup tournament.

Ramires scored the lone goal for Chelsea in the 16th minute.

"We are trying to find our fitness and get the team playing the right way," said midfielder Frank Lampard. "We could have played better."

It was a disappointing loss for Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho who was facing his old club just three months after his acrimonious departure from the Spanish giants.

Mourinho left Real Madrid to rejoin Chelsea, a team he led to back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006.

Real Madrid started quickly outshooting Chelsea 7-2 in the first 27 minutes and opening the scoring on a goal by Marcelo.

Marcelo finished off a nice run to the goal by hammering a shot through the legs of defender Gary Cahill and past a diving Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Ramires tied it up just two minutes later as he sprinted past the defense before finishing off the play with soft chip over a charging goalkeeper Iker Casillas from in close.

The game was interrupted briefly in the second half when a Real Madrid fan ran onto the field and hugged Ronaldo, who held onto him until security arrived.

That was as close as anyone on the pitch would get to containing the mighty Ronaldo all night.

After missing a couple of early chances he finally connected for his first goal in the 31st minute.

Ronaldo drew a foul and then found the back of the net with a perfectly placed bending shot from 25 feet that fooled Cech.

Ronaldo connected again in the 57th minute as he sprinted towards the goal and headed in a cross from teammate 'Isco' Alarcon.

"I just tried to help my team and score goals," Ronaldo said.

The three goals allowed by Chelsea were the first allowed in three Champions Cup tournament matches.

"We had a long preseason. We travelled to Asia for two weeks, played three games here and we got one more. It is going to be an exciting season for us," Lampard said.

Earlier in the day, AC Milan won the third-place match by beating the LA Galaxy 2-0.

Ireland qualify for ICC World Twenty20 2014

Ireland qualify for ICC World Twenty20 2014

Ireland beats the Netherlands by 2 runs in tense finish, Sri Lanka and Pakistan share trophy
Ireland qualified for the ICC World Twenty20 2014 as there was a tense finale to the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier in Dublin as it went down to the final ball, with Ireland beating the Netherlands by 2 runs.
With play washed out in the Trophy Final and the 3rd/4th Shield play-off, play finally began at 1445 as the ground staff at YMCA did an outstanding job to get the Trophy 3rd/4th play-off underway. Isobel Joyce (72 not out) and Clare Shillington (6) opened the batting for Ireland, they lost any early wicket as Shillington cut the ball, taking a little edge and Veringmeier did the rest behind the stumps. Isobel Joyce put in a captain’s performance scoring 72 runs not out with 6 fours and batted throughout the Ireland’s innings.

Kim Garth (31) joined her at the crease and took the attack to the Dutch bowlers with a fantastic innings, with boundaries and great running between the wickets both kept the score ticking over. Garth was then out caught lbw by Bennett, an 80 run partnership with the captain, leaving Ireland on 87 runs for 2 wickets.

Cecelia Joyce (8) came to the crease and was back to the pavilion in no time as she made a good connection with a Kornet delivery and picked out Rambaldo at short mid-wicket. Waldron (3) and Delany (6) were the other wickets to fall, as Ireland finished on 136 runs for 5 wickets, the pick of the Dutch bowlers was Bratt who got 2 wickets for 24 runs.
The Netherlands reply got off to a slow start with Ireland chasing down every ball, before Miranda Veringmeier (3) was bowled out by McCarthy. Tessa van der Gun (20) hit the ball high in the air to cover sweeper and Cecelia Joyce caught it at the second attempt.

As the clouds closed in around YMCA everyone’s eyes was on Duckworth Lewis after the fifth over had been played. Rambaldo (58 not out) and Siegers (29) looked for every scoring opportunity and were putting the Dutch into a strong position.

However, in the fifteenth over there a was mix up between the batters and Siegers could not get back into her ground and was run out, with this the balance tipped slightly back into Ireland’s favour.

Rambaldo and Bratt (12) tried every attempt to chase down the total, with every over passing the run rate increased and the Irish bowlers kept it tight.
The Dutch kept plugging away and going into the last over they needed 12 runs, it was a nail-biting end, needing 3 from the last ball. Delany bowled to Braat and the the ball was hit to long-on, needing three to tie, Rambaldo kept running and Braat didn’t, the ball was thrown in to the keepers end and the bails were taken off by Waldron.

This sparked celebrations by Ireland as they won by 2 runs and the devastated Dutch could only look on, Rambaldo batted excellently for her 58 runs including 3 fours, but it will be Ireland who travel to Bangladesh for the ICC World Twenty20 2014.
The heavy overnight rain fell which made the pitches at Merrion and YMCA unplayable in the morning and both matches were abandoned. The Pakistan v Sri Lanka match was abandoned and therefore the trophy was shared, Sri Lanka finish above Pakistan in the rankings due to net run rate as both teams had won an equal amount of matches throughout the tournament.

The Shield 3rd/4th play-off between Japan and Canada was abandoned due to a wet outfield, Canada finished ahead of Japan as they had won more matches.
The Player of the Tournament was named as Pakistan’s Bismah Maroof, she performed excellently throughout the tournament and thoroughly deserved the award.

Sachin Tendulkar cherishes ICC Cricket World Cup 1992 memories

Sachin Tendulkar cherishes ICC Cricket World Cup 1992 memories

Sachin Tendulkar says that the tournament provided him the opportunity to play against the best players of that era, but is disappointed at not playing against his hero Viv Richards

"Jonty Rhodes run out of Inzamam-ul-Haq was one of the highlights of the World Cup"

Four days after the fixtures of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 were announced for the tournament to be staged in Australia and New Zealand for the first time in 23 years, India’s Sachin Tendulkar has recalled memories of the 1992 event in which he entered as a teenager and today stands as a modern day icon.

Tendulkar scored 283 runs in the ICC Cricket World Cup 1992 at an average of just over 47 and was man of the match in India’s only two victories – over Pakistan by 43 runs and Zimbabwe by 55 runs.

The maestro retired from limited overs cricket last year after playing in 463 ODIs in which he scored 18,426 runs, including 49 centuries. In the 198 Tests to date, Tendulkar has scored 15,837 runs at an average of just under 54 with 51 centuries.

Remembering his progress from a ball boy in the ICC Cricket World Cup 1987 to being alongside the legends of that era in the best tournament, a modest Tendulkar said: “I remember in 1987, I was a ball boy so it was a big transformation for me from being a ball boy to participating in the next World Cup.

“I still remember the group picture of teams in Sydney. It was followed by a dinner at the Darling Harbour. It was an unbelievable experience with all the top players from the world in the room. I didn’t speak much to anyone. But just to see them from close vicinity was special.

“Just look at each team at that World Cup, there were some big names.

“England had Ian Botham, Graham Gooch, Allan Lamb. If you talk about South Africa, there was Kepler Wessels leading them and Peter Kirsten as a senior player. For Pakistan, there was Imran Khan, Javed Miandad and Wasim Akram. Having got a chance to play against them in Pakistan in 1989 itself was wonderful, but playing them in a world championship was a different feeling altogether.

“West Indies had Desmond Haynes, Richie Richardson, Malcolm Marshall and Curtly Ambrose. I was quite disappointed that Vivian Richards was not part of the West Indies squad. He was (and still is) my hero, so it was disappointing that I could not play against him.

“Australia was led by Allan Border, and Steve and Mark Waugh, and Craig McDermott were an important part of their squad. New Zealand had Martin Crowe and John Wright who played that World Cup.  Sri Lanka had the likes of Aravinda de Silva and Arjuna Ranatunga.”

Tendulkar said the ICC Cricket World Cup 1992 also introduced a number of newcomers to the world who went on to become household names and great ambassadors for the game.

“I have to say Allan Donald was a big name then. Everyone spoke about how good he was. Then there was Jonty Rhodes. His run out of Inzamam-ul-Haq was one of the highlights of the World Cup. Not many guys have seen a run out like that!

“West Indies had Brian Lara who was special with his flamboyant batting. For Pakistan there was Wasim Akram who was at the peak of his career, and Inzamam-ul-Haq who played an important knock in the semi-final. From New Zealand, Mark Greatbatch gave them some amazing starts, but Martin Crowe was the one who batted beautifully and was consistent throughout the tournament.

“I remember a new trend started in the tournament of opening the bowling with spin in the form of Dipak Patel. I don’t think it had happened earlier.

“I thought these were the guys who really made an impact. To play against them was always a wonderful challenge, which I enjoyed”

As a player who has played in three different decades, Tendulkar considered himself lucky to have been pitted his skills against the great all-rounders of the 1980s.

“There were some real big names and some of the world’s top all-rounders. One thing I feel happy about is that I played against all of them: Richard Hadlee, Malcolm Marshall, Clive Rice, Kapil Dev, Imran Khan and Ian Botham. They were the best all-rounders the game had produced.

“Having been able to play against them I consider myself very fortunate. It was quite an experience to play those top guys.”

Reflecting on the 1991-92 tour to Australia and New Zealand for the ICC Cricket World Cup 1992, Tendulkar said: “I remember the tour of Australia that preceded the World Cup was a very tough one for us. But I had done reasonably well, scoring a couple of hundreds in the Test series. Then I had also followed it up with some decent performances in the Tri-series (also featuring Australia and West Indies).

“I was feeling quite good about my own form. Having scored a couple of hundreds over there (in the Tests), it had taken my confidence to a new level and I was looking forward to a major tournament like the World Cup.

“I had been to New Zealand in 1990, so I exactly knew what conditions to expect in there.”

Tendulkar said the ICC Cricket World Cup 1992 was a memorable tournament and was thoroughly enjoyed not only by the visiting sides but also by the two host nations.

“I have to say that not just the players were excited to be part of this magnificent event, along with us, all the Australians and New Zealanders were really excited to host the tournament. The kind of response that we got was incredible.

“There was a vibrant energy and you felt that wherever you went. Good performances were appreciated by everyone and were acknowledged by all. It was overall a terrific experience,” he concluded.

Australia has edge despite Pietersen ton

Australia has edge despite Pietersen ton

England ends third day on 294/7, still 233 runs off Australia’s first-innings total
Talent can be a difficult thing to control and relate to, particularly if the person in possession of that talent is Kevin Pietersen – and even if you happen to be Kevin Pietersen. But talent is almost always worth the trouble, and there can no longer be anyone in the England dressing room that does not consider Pietersen to be worth the trouble. When he marched to the middle, England was tottering at 64 for 3, and when he left, the score had advanced to 280, his contribution 113. By the end of yet another compelling day – the third day of the third Test on Saturday (August 3), England had reached 294 for 7 and was 28 runs away from avoiding the follow-on, a significant step in its bid to retain the Ashes.

So often accused of showmanship by those who pay or are paid to watch a show, this Pietersen innings was no such thing, restrained and refined – and also reprieved. Australia decided against reviewing a not out decision, given after Shane Watson rapped him on the pad in front of the stumps, when he had scored 62.

That Pietersen had no choice but to bat as he did is testament to the excellence of Watson, Peter Siddle and Ryan Harris. From the very start of the day, they settled into yesterday’s groove as though they’d spent all night there, Harris muscling in at decent pace and also finding some reverse swing. Both Siddle and Harris crowded Jonathan Trott, preventing him from scoring in his favourite area with two short midwickets. Bat not coming down straight, Trott never looked relaxed, particularly disconcerting for a man so obsessed with technique.

At the other end, Alastair Cook was comfortable enough. A clip to midwicket and a luscious cover drive brought him early-morning boundaries, but in the main, he was content to nurdle along; is anyone ever more content than Cook nurdling along?

But Trott was soon gone. When Harris moved one into him off the seam, he first followed, then tried to evade – by which time it was too late, the ball homing in against his bat and low into the hands of Michael Clarke at second slip. Out for only five, his series average stands at just 22.2.

This brought Pietersen to the crease, his pathological aversion to being on zero tempting him into waving the bat at a very wide first ball. Then another false shot squirted to midwicket, after which he only just managed to repel an inswinging yorker.

A push down the ground and an obliging misfield brought up Cook’s half-century, while Pietersen gradually fumbled his way into the game. His first boundary was turned away very finely on the legside, but generally, Australia was baiting him to drive, bowling an offside line and gathering men behind the bat.

To that end, and with his score only 11, Mitchell Starc tempted Pietersen with a short delivery. But Pietersen was on to the ruse almost before its conception, ball despatched to the midwicket boundary in short order. The next delivery, though not as short, was still short, and again, Pietersen was there waiting for it with a pirouette that was almost a golf swing, burning it down to the fence in a style reminiscent of Gordon Greenidge.

Then, just as a partnership appeared to have settled, Australia disturbed it. Bowling with a cross-seam to guard against swing, Starc strayed to leg – possibly on purpose, probably not. A man disinclined to miss out on easy runs, Cook pursued the ball with his body but left his head behind and glanced his shot too finely, Brad Haddin’s superb flying grasp sending Cook on his way. Suddenly, England was one wicket away from serious strife.

But Ian Bell was next in, not so much seeing it big as biggest. Off the mark with a four glided through point, it looked from the start as though it would take something special to shift him.

In the period immediately after lunch, Pietersen started to move his feet, an ominous sign. Tucking into Nathan Lyon, he blasted a six to long on, immediately followed by another over mid off, taking him past 50. Then, in Lyon’s next over, Bell hoisted a six over mid off, then painted a four down to deep point.

Though both batsmen looked thoroughly entrenched, Pietersen is forever a rash decision away from uttering “it’s just the way I play”. Determining to hop down the track to a Watson ball pitched on middle and off, he mis-swiped and was struck on the pad, apparently in front of the stumps. But Tony Hill rejected the ensuing appeal and Clarke chose not to send the decision upstairs, only to discover, very quickly, that Pietersen was in line. Upon receipt of the awful news, Watson quickly worked through a scale of disbelief, fury and despair; of 15 requested reviews in the series, Australia has been correct only twice, this error effectively equivalent to a dropped catch.

Mindful of his good fortune, Pietersen restrained his inclination in the remainder of the session. Even when Australia took the second new ball, he left the strokeplay to Bell, who reached his 50 just before tea, thanks to the usual variety of clips, cuts, and drives.

The proforma persisted into the evening, Bell’s control almost indecent, Pietersen again circumspect. But the bowling was consistently demanding. When Siddle induced Pietersen to edge, the ball running through the vacant second slip area, it brought his first boundary in more than two hours. Then, in the next over, Harris found a little bit of extra bounce and movement, cutting Bell in half and clattering the top of his off-stump. Having not looked for a moment like losing his wicket, Bell was gone to a ball simply too good not to snatch it from him, for 60 – including 46 runs’ worth of boundaries – with England’s score at 225.

This brought to the wicket Jonny Bairstow, who had scored just two, when Starc bowled a short, wide ball, trying to tempt Pietersen into a big shot to bring up his century, and Pietersen slashed it up and over point for four.

Bairstow’s busyness kept things moving, but every time Australia was desperate for a wicket, it got one. With his score at 22, Starc persuaded Bairstow into a drive, and Watson took a very smart catch down by his right ankle. This did little to assuage Watson’s frustration following an afternoon of near things, and the ball was thrown away in something approximating to disgust.

But just four overs later came further consolation. Starc, who had his best day of the series, found some late movement to move the ball away from Pietersen, who misjudged the line and was caught on the pad. The review was requested almost apologetically, revealing that he was out, and then some, leaving to a richly merited standing ovation. Perhaps the least typical of all his Test centuries, and for precisely that reason, it was also one of his best, and certainly one of his most important. Talent is almost always worth the trouble.
